Rumania contracts for rehabilitation
The energy economy of Rumania is being restructured with international aid, and the highest priority in the government`s long-term economic reform program has been given to the development of the electricity and heating supply systems. According to a report in Aktuell from Lahmeyer International, national energy supply utility RENEL has commissioned a consortium of engineering companies under Lahmeyer`s leadership to completely overhaul individual power plant units of various sizes, with a total capacity of 1,600 MW in eight steam power plants. This is approximately one-fourth of the thermal power plant capacity in the country.
The project is scheduled for completion in 1999. Further elements of the long-term program include organizational and operational improvements.
The aim of the power plant rehabilitation is plant lifetime extension with a simultaneous increase in efficiency and plant availability to at least 80 percent. The consortium includes partners from the US, UK and Rumania.
