Rolls-Royce wins Bohunice contract

Rolls-Royce Nuclear Engineering has won a contract to take a series of material samples from reactors at the Bohunice nuclear power plant in the Slovak Republic during its next outage.

Slovenske Electrarne, station operator, needs to identify the exact properties of the major pressure vessel construction welds on two older 230 reactors for a variety of safety assessments. The plant has four operational VVER440 reactors.

Rolls-Royce will use its SSam2 surface sampling process to take samples from the external surface of the pressure vessel. A thin hemispherical shell cutter with an abrasive coating on its outside edge will take samples of up to 25 mm in diameter and 6 mm thick, subject to surface geometry.

Rolls-Royce has devised its most compact cutting system to date to operate on the previously inaccessible Bohunice reactor external annular gap, only 35 mm wide.
