IPP growth reported

Calpine Corp., one of the fastest growing independent power companies in the USA, has reported record second quarter earnings. Net income for the second quarter rose 23 per cent on the same period for 1997, while revenues jumped 109 per cent to $141.6m.

Burkina Faso to open energy sector

The government of Burkina Faso is to open the country`s energy sector to private operators. A bill was due to be submitted to parliament last month providing for the liberalization of production and distribution of electricity.

Slovenia has stopped supplying Croatia with electricity from their jointly-owned Krsko nuclear power plant because Croatia has failed to pay its $14m bill. Croatia has said it will make up for the shortfall by generation from its own capacity.

PowerGen-Houston talks collapse

Merger talks between PowerGen of the UK and the USA-based Houston Industries have been called off. Differences over how the companies would be valued in a deal are the main reason for the collapse.

Modular steam turbines

Blohm + Voss Industritechnik GmbH (B+VI) recently introduced a new line of steam turbines called MARC (Modular Arrangement Concept). The turbogenerator has a modular construction concept for the turbogenerator - the modules being: turbine; gearbox/generator; lubricating oil system; control oil system; and measuring and control system.

The gas industry regulator Ofgas said in August that more than 3 million households have switched supplier in the past four months.

IPP partnership

US companies Teco Power Services Corp. and Mosbacher Power Partners have agreed to jointly develop, own and operate domestic and international independent power projects. Teco will provide capital and technical expertise to Mosbacher.

Oman

Iran`s Power Plant Project Management company has won a $14.8m contract to build a power plant in Salalah, southern Oman. The turnkey contract involves planning, construction and operation of a 30 MW plant.

TNB seeks to renegotiate power contracts

Malaysia`s national power utility Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is seeking to renegotiate agreements with independent power producers. The utility says that it is struggling to meet payments and is seeking a deferment and discount approach as a way out.
