Sidi Krir agreements

The InterGen Sidi Krir Generating Company and the Egyptian Electricity Authority (EEA) have finalized several agreements for the $450m Sidi Krir power project.

PacifiCorp loss

PacifiCorp has reported that its trading operations suffered a $51m pretax loss in 2Q as a result of the Midwest`s volatile market. The losses are almost four times what was predicted and are the cause of a 60 per cent drop in the company`s overall earnings.

Pakistan

The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank are to lend Pakistan $250m for restructuring the Water and power Development Authority (Wapda) and Karachi Electric Supply Corp. The World Bank has also asked that the government allows Wapda to increase its tariffs by 19 per cent.

GreenStar goes small

The GreenStar modules of Series 1, with a power output of 70 kWe (J106) and 150 kWe (J156) has been launched to round off the Jenbacher power output range at the smaller end.

Azerbaijan

Three contracts have been signed between the Azerbaijan government and foreign oil companies for the development of the country`s oil reserves.

Fuel cell agreement

Energy Research Corporation has extended its long term fuel cell license agreement with MTU Friedrichshafen. It will allow the two companies to manufacture and sell each other`s stationary power fuel cell products in their respective regions.

Turbine measurement at Connahs Quay

Specialist non-contact temperature measurement equipment for monitoring turbine blades has been supplied to Connah`s Quay power station by Land Infrared.

Mining groups to repay aid

The European Commission (EC) has ruled that two German mining groups used state aid to illegally subsidize coal exports. Preussag Anthrazit and Sophia Jacoba have been ordered to repay DM20.35m ($11m).

IPP growth reported

Calpine Corp., one of the fastest growing independent power companies in the USA, has reported record second quarter earnings. Net income for the second quarter rose 23 per cent on the same period for 1997, while revenues jumped 109 per cent to $141.6m.

Burkina Faso to open energy sector

The government of Burkina Faso is to open the country`s energy sector to private operators. A bill was due to be submitted to parliament last month providing for the liberalization of production and distribution of electricity.
