GE chill in Abu Dhabi
A rise in demand for chilled water at Mussafah Industrial City in Abu Dhabi resulted in Drake and Scull contracting GE to supply three Jenbacher generator sets.
The installation of three JGS 616 GS-NL gensets, which each have an output of just over 2 MW was GE’s first gas engine project in the United Arab Emirates.
The installation has enabled water to be cooled so it can be distributed along a 43 km pipeline network providing air conditioning for a resedential area that includes apartments and shopping centres.

After a surge in demand at its two cement plants near Jazan and Bisha in Saudi Arabia, Southern Cement Company purchased two Wärtsilä gensets to provide the necessary power plant extensions. Together, the two cement plants produce 4.1 million tonnes of cement clinker a year.
The Jazan plant’s two production lines were previously powered by eight Wärtsilä 16ZV40/48 generating sets that ran on heavy fuel oil and provided 58 MW. A 10.9 MW extension of capacity has been provided by a Wärtsilä genset that is powered by the Scandinavian company’s own 18V38B diesel engine.
The genset at the cement plant near Bisha runs in parallel with the existing generating plant and provides 9.6 MW of extra power. Though instead of running on heavy fuel oil it uses crude oil to generate.
Four plus two equals security
A bauxite mine in Weipa, Australia will be supplied with six 9L32/40 four-stroke MAN B&W diesel engines from September 2005.
Finding a suitable power source for the peninsula in the north-east of the country presented a difficult challenge as its remote location means that access to electricity from the state grid is limited while the monsoon season makes reliability a key factor as the area is inaccessible by road.
MAN B&W presented a reliable power solution in its 32/40 gensets which have large bore engines while the four plus two setup enhanced the security. Four of the six engines may be continuously operating, with two engines in reserve allowing backup for maintenance, operational flexibility and any engine stoppages that are unscheduled.
The 9L32/40 engine is also available as dual fuel, which is ideal for locations where gas is available and the operator wants to maintain the option of the reliability offered by diesel.
Cummins provides pumping power
Situated 155 miles north of Riyadh, in Al Hunnay, is a deep water well project that will the provide fresh water to the Saudi Arabian capital.
As utility power is not scheduled to reach the site for at least another five years, the Saudi Ministry of Water turned to Cummins to provide a genset solution that would enable the city to keep up with the tremendous growth predicted for it over the next twenty years.
Cummins provided 62 MW of power for the main pumping station and three booster stations, which will be on site until the end of 2007. Its 1500 kW trailer mounted diesel generators use the Cummins 16-cylinder KTA5069 diesel engine and are controlled by the PowerCommand PCC2100 Digital Master Controller.
Peaking power from the mobile Titan
A new mobile power unit designed to address the demand for peaking power has been launched by Solar Turbines. The company believes that the Titan 130 will provide customers with reliable, low cost, on site peaking power that will meet the need for short term capacity and reduce exposure to market price spikes or system capacity constraints.
The power unit’s compact footprint and trailer-mounted system make it suitable for rental fleets and utility equipment pools. In order to make any necessary permit applications easier, the company has also fitted its SoLoNOx combustion system to reduce the unit’s emissions.
At the core of the Solar mobile genset is the recently uprated 14.9 MW Titan 130 industrial gas turbine, which can be dispatched to be on line in six minutes from cold start. A dual fuel combustion system provides the flexibility of operating on either diesel or natural gas. Its control system options offer remote operation and Scada integration, also, kVAr control provides a reactive power capability. Solar can provide a range of support programmes with the product.
