A consortium comprising Siemens, Framatome and Fabricom has replaced the three steam generators in the Belgian nuclear power plant Doel 4. The components each weigh 450 metric tons. The replacement operations–lifting out the old steam generators, replacing them with the new equipment items and reconnection of the reactor coolant loops–were completed in 27 days, a record according to Siemens. Steam generator replacement in the 1,000 MW nuclear power plant, in operation since 1985, had become necessary as a result of progressive degradation of the original equipment.
