Nevada, US-based ElectraTherm has installed an energy recovery system at a German biogas facility, boosting the plant’s efficiency by over 10%.

According to the company, working with its distributor SE-TECH, it fitted the plant with a Green Machine Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system, in tandem with a small steam engine to a GE Jenbacher 312 generator set at the biogas facility.

The company said that this installation is the first of its kind to combine the Green Machine with a steam engine at a biogas facility, and is recovering an additional 67 kWe of energy, boosting the efficiency of the power plant by more than 10%.

The waste heat is provided by a 635 kW Jenbacher engine running on biogas, with exhaust heat used to generate steam for the small steam engine.

The company added that the power generated from the waste heat meets the German heat utilisation requirements to earn renewable energy credits resulting in a very strong ROI for the Green Machine of approximately 3.5 years for the plant owner.
