Chile scraps renewables target

Chile has scrapped its target of generating 20 per cent of its power from renewables by 2020.

The U-turn was made by energy minister Jorge Bunster in a presentation to the Chilean senate.

He said the reason for the turnaround was economic and technical difficulties, principally a lack of transmission infrastructure in the country’s rural areas.

The government is now planning to revert to an earlier renewables target of 10 per cent by 2024.

The 20 per cent goal was made by Chilean president Sebastian Pinera when he took office in 2010.
