ABWR in service for Japan`s TEPCO

The world`s first advanced nuclear power plant, the advanced boiling water reactor (ABWR), entered commercial service Nov. 7, 1996, on the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) system. The 1,356 MW plant was built in four years. Design and manufacture of the two 1,356 MW reactors at TEPCO`s Kashiwazaki-Kariwa site is a joint effort of General Electric, Hitachi Ltd. and Toshiba Corp. A second ABWR, K-7, is under construction and scheduled for commercial operation by mid-1997.

GE has announced another ABWR contract, with Taiwan Power Co. The (US)$1.8 billion order calls for GE to design and supply the reactors and fuel for two 1,350 MW ABWRs for commercial operation in 2003 and 2004, respectively for Taiwan`s fourth nuclear power plant project, called Lungmen.
