For the first time, the Eiffel Tower in Paris has been lit up by electricity produced from certified renewable hydrogen.

The hydrogen, supplied by Air Liquide, lit up the Tower for a laser show during the Paris de l’hydrogène event organised by Energy Observer. The event is showcasing the potential role of hydrogen in France’s green recovery, as well as raising awareness of the energy transition in general.

Air Liquide is participating in this event by supplying 400kg of renewable hydrogen. This is needed to run the exhibition village for the duration of the event, as well as to light up the Eiffel Tower. An electro-hydrogen generator developed by start-up EODev (Energy Observer Developments) was also used.

EODev’s GEH2® generator is emissions free and does not emit any fine particles. The hydrogen generator replaces diesel generators to supply energy to the exhibition village. For the first time in more than 130 years, an alternative solution has enabled the illumination of the most visited monument in the world, said EODev.

Originally the first autonomous, zero-emission hydrogen vessel, Energy Observer now combines expeditions and climate-oriented technical innovations. Air Liquide has supported Energy Observer since its inception and is committed to using hydrogen as a clean energy carrier for a wide range of applications, including industrial processes and clean mobility.
