Gas delegates cast doubts on shale boom

A poll of gas industry insiders has found that few believe shale gas will overtake conventional gas or liquefied natural gas in the future.

The survey was taken among hundreds of delegates at the European Autumn Gas Conference in Paris today.

On the question of how gas supplies to Europe would evolve in the next 20 years, few felt that unconventional gas would become the much talked about ‘game-changer’ for Europe.

Earlier this week the phrase game-changer was used in relation to shale gas by Michael Yeager, boss of BHP Billiton’s petroleum arm, as the company announced it would spend around $4.5bn on developing its new shale gas business next year, with the figure rising to $6.5bn annually by 2020.
