Report critical of shale gas drilling

A critical report into drilling for shale gas is due to be delivered in the coming weeks, and could check the progress of gas fueled power generation in Britain.

An inquiry commissioned by the UK Department of Energy is expected to confirm that exploratory wells triggered two small earthquakes near Blackpool, England last year.

Cuadrilla Resources, the company responsible for the exploration claim that they have found 200 trillion cubic feet, equivalent to nearly 70 years of British demand, reports the Times.

Experts say that recovery rates and constraints mean the company will only be able to produce a tenth of that gas, however Whitehall is keen to exploit the resources, as energy bills soar.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change hired independent scientists to determine the cause of the tremors and their report is expected to offer ideas on best practice and a brief period of public consultation.
