A subsidiary of Foster Wheeler’s Global Engineering and Construction Group has received an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCm) services contract from Sasol New Energy Holdings for the outside battery limit (OBL) portion of a new on-site gas fired power plant at Sasolburg, South Africa.

Foster Wheeler’s scope will include the earthworks for the entire OBLsite; an access road; utility connections; 15/88 kV step-up transformers; and an 88 kV substation with associated electrical infrastructure and network system.

Foster Wheeler is scheduled to complete its work by the third quarter of 2012

According to Sasol, this project is expected to raise its electricity self-sufficiency capacity to 840 MW, or 60 per cent of its total needs, and forms part of a plan to reduce Sasol’s carbon emissions and improve power self-sufficiency.

Umberto della Sala, chief operating officer of Foster Wheeler, said: “This award, which follows our recently announced EPCm win for the Sasolburg Utilities Expansion, highlights Sasol’s confidence in our South African operation.”
