Japan’s Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) and Sumitomo Corporation have won a joint contract to build a 450 MW gas-fired power plant in Tunisia.

The contract from national utility Société Tunisienne de l’Electricité et du Gaz (STEG) includes EPC services for the combined-cycle plant in Rades in the Ben Arous governorate.

Under the terms of the contract, Sumitomo will provide the balance of plant and handle the civil engineering and installation. MHPS will contribute a M701F gas turbine, a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and a steam turbine, as well as technical support during installation and commissioning. Mitsubishi Electric Corporation will provide the generators.

Financing is to be provided by the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) scheme, organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

When completed, the $341m project is planned to provide around 10 per cent of Tunisia’s power.

The plant is planned to come online in 2020.
