Japan’s LNG use soars

Japan’s utility companies used 4.36 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas last month, a 23 per cent rise from a year earlier, reflecting the shortfall in nuclear power following the Fukishima disaster.

Data released today by the Federation of Electric Power Companies shows that while coal consumption fell 9 per cent during the same period, the 10 utilities used 21 per cent more fuel oil and 10 per cent more crude.

Together the power firms generated 76.3 billion kWh of electricity in September, down 9.1 per cent from the previous year.
