A massive explosion has occurred this morning at one of Europe’s largest gas compressor stations.
A fire followed the blast at the site, which happened around 08:45 (07:45 GMT) in the town, just east of Vienna, near the Slovak border.
BBC reports Austrian police as saying the situation was under control and a technical fault had caused the blast. One unconfirmed report spoke of 60 hurt. Emergency teams are at the scene.
Baumgarten is a hub for imported Russian gas, receiving some 40 billion cubic metres of gas annually and redistributing it elsewhere in Europe including to Germany and northern Italy.
