Exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of landmark gas turbine plants

Experts from Siemens Energy took an audience of PEi and Enlit Europe viewers on a rare virtual tour of three landmark gas turbine facilities.

In a live webcast, firstly Thomas Koeppe opened the doors to a facility that has been purpose-built in the US to test Siemens Energy’s SGT-9000HL 60Hz turbine.

Frank Schneider then used drone footage to give a birds’ eye view of Keadby power plant in the UK, home to the 50Hz version of the SGT-9000HL and the largest one-on-one combined-cycle power plant in the world.

And Radim Znajda delivered a sneak peek into the company’s Clean Energy Centre in Berlin.

Koeppe said the SGT-9000HL “really is a monster” in terms of power and efficiency, with 6000 integrated sensors and developed “using the latest testing technologies” by “the best experts from around the globe”.

It is being tested at the Lincoln Combustion Turbine Station in North Carolina, a project built in collaboration with Duke Energy.

Following testing, the plant will be handed over to Duke in 2024: “They will have an exceptional peaking unit to add to their fleet,” said Koeppe, who is Head of Business Development and Innovation at Siemens Energy.

He explained that there were several innovations at the plant, including the ability to increase inlet air to simulate conditions in hot, dry countries.

And he added that plant construction remained on track despite “four hurricanes and Covid”.

Schneider’s presentation took the audience on a tour of the 840 MW Keadby power plant in England, owned by SSE Thermal and built on the site of a former coal power station.

“Such a plant can power a city the size of Berlin on its own,” said Schneider.

The episode concluded with a focus on Siemens Energy’s Clean Energy Centre in Berlin, where combustion tests on hydrogen, LNG, and other fuels are run.

Znajda, Product Line Manager and Business Development Manager for the HL-class, said the hydrogen capability is a key prerequisite to drive decarbonization and make the HL-class a future-proof technology.
