Europe must do more to develop shale gas and better integrate its pipeline network, the chief executive of Italian energy company Eni SpA has told Dow Jones.

Gas infrastructure is increasingly important for Europe’s energy security, said Paolo Scaroni on the sidelines of the International Energy Agency ministerial meeting in Paris.

“We should be doing the most on shale gas in our continent, because domestic conventional gas is decreasing rapidly in traditional gas producing countries,” he said.

Cross-border pipeline connections must also be improved to ensure security of supply, which may require a single European pipeline authority, be said.
