A combined heat and power (CHP) system at a US medical centre has come online ahead of schedule, its developer announced this week.

The 4.6 MW gas-fired system was installed at the Baystate Medical Centre in Springfield, Massachusetts by designer-builder Waldron Engineering & Construction.

Waldron said the project included a new power plant building, the first Solar Turbines Mercury 50 gas turbines to be permitted in Massachusetts (without a requirement for exhaust gas emissions treatment equipment), a duct-fired heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), a new steam absorption chilling system, a new natural gas compression system, a new black start reciprocating engine, and new medium and low voltage switchgear as well as modifications to an existing steam and chilled water plant. 

The project’s equipment has also been engineered for the future installation of a hot water system with an eye to further energy savings, Waldron said.

Financing included a federal grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, incentives from the local utility and state grants.

The Bay State Medical Centre is Massachusetts’ largest level 1 trauma hospital. The CHP installation is expected to save it around $2m per year.
