Bord Gais Energy is set to be sold to British Gas owner, Centrica, in a deal estimated at $1.53bn.

The deal to purchase the Irish-state gas company, which is expected to be completed at the end of January,  would include a gas-fired power plant in Cork.

The 445 MW Whitegate plant was opened in 2010.

Centrica, Brookfield Renewable Power and iCON Infrastructure have been chosen as preferred bidders to buy Bord Gáis’ retail operations, the power plant and some wind farms.

The FT reports that while the country’s gas network would be retained in State ownership, the energy and customer business of Bord Gáis is to be sold as part of the deal.
