Bulgarian protesters march against Chevron shale gas deal

Demonstrators marched through the Bulgarian capital of Sofia today to protest against government plans to start drilling for shale gas.

In June the government struck a deal to allow Chevron to explore potential shale gas reserves in the northeast of the country.

Energy minister Traicho Traikov has said Bulgaria may have enough shale gas to meet its demands for the next millennium.

But todayࢀ™s protesters feared potential environmental damage from shale gas exploration and called for it to be banned.

Meanwhile in China today, refiner Sinopec clinched a deal to buy a massive area that is potentially rich in shale gas reserves in Canada.
