ABB substation upgrade for New York grid

A substation provided by ABB is to integrate electricity from a natural gas facility, boosting power transmission capacity and enhancing power reliability for about one million homes in New York City.

ABB announced it had won the order from Bechtel Infrastructure and Power to provide a turnkey substation solution. The substation will integrate electricity generated by the Cricket Valley Energy Station, a new combined cycle natural gas-fuelled power plant located in Dover, north of the city.

It will add more than 1,100 MW of power and enhance the reliability of the New York transmission grid, benefitting about a million homes in the region.

The 345 kilovolt (kV) gas insulated switchgear (GIS) substation will deploy ABB’s GIS technology enhancing operational reliability, efficiency and safety while minimizing substation footprint and maintenance requirements.

This is the second such substation ABB is providing for Bechtel – the first being the 345kV GIS substation for the Hummel Energy Center to be energized later this year.
