$1bn gas-fired power plant planned for Mexico

Techint Group are planning to invest in the region of $1bn to build a natural gas-fired power plant in Mexico.

The steel and energy conglomerate is to join forces with Tecpetrol International to build the 900 MW plant in Nuevo Leon state.

The project seeks to take advantage of Mexico’s efforts to open up its energy sector. Under current law, energy generated by the plant would have to be sold exclusively through state-owned utility CFE. Under President Enrique Pena Nieto’s proposal, Techint’s plant will be able to sell its electricity directly to buyers.

The Mexican government hopes the move will be of benefit to the country’s electricity system.
