Technology startup High Hopes has launched a new carbon capture and storage solution, which the firm claims is cost-effective compared to existing technologies.

The solution was developed jointly in Israel and Germany and the startup was launched in 2019. Deploying renewable energy, electric vehicles and energy efficiency programmes and planting more trees is crucial to combating climate change. However, such smart energy solutions are not enough to meet decarbonisation goals set under the Paris Climate Change agreements and other ambitious climate action targets being set by different governments across the globe, according to High Hopes.

Reversing carbon dioxide by capturing it straight from the atmosphere is one potential game changer in addressing climate change. Carbon capture technologies that are already on the market are expensive and require a lot of resources. This lead to High Hopes developing a more cost-effective solution that includes the use of high-flying balloons to capture carbon emitted and present at high altitudes.

Using the process, prevailing low temperatures and constant winds save the majority of the energy required for the process. The captured carbon dioxide is then brought down to the ground, where it is either buried underground or repurposed.

Eran Oren, founder and chief scientist of High Hopes, said: “The global climate crisis is only getting worse, and we must act quickly, together with the Biden Administration and other governments, to address it.

“By making this adjustment—putting the technology in the sky—we have the ability to undo our carbon footprint.

“You can roughly divide existing carbon capture solutions into three categories: physics, chemistry, and biology, the majority of these solutions will be significantly more efficient if deployed high above the ground.”
