UK decarbonisation bid defeated

There was disappointment for renewable power generation firms on Wednesday when the House of Commons in London voted against a bid by green energy businesses to decarbonise the UK’s electricity generation by 2030.

It was, at 290 to 267, a narrow defeat for the proposed amendment to the Energy Bill. Green campaigners had hoped the amendment would have provided the clarity needed for greater investment in the sector.
Under the amendment, electricity generators would have had to use more renewables, carbon capture and storage and nuclear power to reduce to nearly zero their carbon production by 2030. The measure had the backing of dozens of businesses, green campaigners and industry associations.
