More plants to be mothballed by RWE

German utility RWE is set to take yet more power plants off the grid as it continues to struggle with the challenge of renewables and sharply reduced prices on the electricity exchange.

Suddeutsche Zeitung reported on Tuesday that another 1000 MW could be set to be taken offline as German energy prices continue to decline markedly. The move is being put down to continuing overcapacities across Europe and state subsidies for electricity generated through renewable sources.

The newspaper quoted unnamed supervisory officials in its report.

RWE has already mothballed 12,600 MW of plant from the beginning of 2013 up until last month.

“And every still existing unit is being thoroughly scrutinized,” RWE’s Matthias Hartung commented in July, adding that the company could not continue operating power plants that just weren’t profitable anymore.
