German Chancellor Angela Merkel is under pressure to keep energy costs in check after a 47 per cent price hike for renewable power was announced to kick in next year.

Chancellor MerkelWith the federal elections also taking place in 2013, Merkel’s government decision to abandon nuclear power entirely is set to meet dissent as consumer energy bills rise significantly.

The looming elections may force politicians to find ways to lessen the additional cost.

Reuters reports that the so-called ‘Umlage’ will reach $26.40bn next year.

Opposition parties have accused the government of letting private consumers bear the brunt, after it exempted energy-intensive heavy industry from green energy and network usage tariffs.
