Centrica has officially appointed Iain Conn as CEO. Mr Conn will leave his role as chief executive of BP Downstream, BP’s refining and marketing division, to replace Sam Laidlaw who steps down at the end of the year.

Mr Conn departs his previous role after seven years running BP’s customer-facing activities in the fuels, lubricants and petrochemicals sectors.

UK-based Centrica chairman Rick Haythornthwaite said: “Iain will bring an impressive combination of experience to our business. He heads a global consumer brand familiar to millions of people and he also possesses a deep understanding of the energy sector built up over a lifetime in the industry.”

Earlier this week Conn’s predecessor, Laidlaw, was highly critical of the place of offshore wind in the UK’s energy mix, and called for a “more affordable pathway to a lower carbon future.”
