US president’s budget cuts DE funding

The total FY 2008 request for the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) at the Department of Energy (DOE) is US$1.236 billion, compared to a funding level for FY 2007 for EERE of $1.473 billion. The request therefore represents a 16% cut from 2007 levels, says the ACEEE. Specifically, the request cuts about $46 million from distributed energy systems in the Office of Electricity budget.

The first step has been taken towards a hybrid wind-diesel project that will supply the south Caribbean island of Bonaire with 10 MW of electricity from wind and 13 MW from diesel. EcoPower Bonaire BV, a consortium of Econcern, Enercon and MAN, has signed a contract with the Water and Energy Company of Bonaire to build a new wind turbine.
