The UAE is to develop solar energy projects in Tonga and Afghanistan in a joint venture with the Development Bank of Japan.
“A grid-connected photovoltaics plant on the island of Vava’u in Tonga will supply 13 per cent of the island’s power, saving 180,000 litres of diesel annually,” he said.
The Afghanistan project would involve providing eight isolated villages with home solar appliances.
Under the initiative, Masdar will also have an equal share partnership with the Development Bank of Japan, with investments focused on solar and wind projects.
