ORC heat-to-power technology to be trialed in UK

Work has started on a demonstration project that will generate electricity using waste heat from industrial sites in Northeast England.

The DRD Power project will be located at the Huntsman Pigments site at Greatham, Hartlepool, using hot water from the plant to generate up to 200 kW of electricity ” saving between 600-750 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.à‚

The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) unit will use wastewater from the plant to heat a fluid with a lower boiling point, and the resulting pressure will drive a generator.
à‚ 
The unit is capable of recovering the vast quantities of low-grade heat (between 90à‚°C and 130à‚°C) generated by an industrial process that is currently emitted to the atmosphere.
à‚ 
As well as being used for waste heat recovery at the process plants, the ORC technology could be used at a wide range of industrial sites, including refineries, petrochemical complexes, steel works, cement works and paper mills, and also in conjunction with biomass, CHP and waste to energy plants.

This à‚£1 million (US$1.6 million) project is due to enter operation by March next year and has received an à‚£248,000 ($397,000) investment from One North East, through the Tees Valley Industrial Programme, which is helping the region to seize new opportunities in low-carbon and advanced manufacturing.

This investment follows a grant of à‚£250,000 ($400,100) from the Carbon Trust to DRD Power towards the development and demonstration of the technology.
