On-site micro-hydro scheme for UK stone company

Forest Pennant, a natural stone company based in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, UK, is celebrating the switch-on of its on-site micro-hydro generation turbine.
à‚
Harnessing the power of the River Lyd, the turbine installation will produce around 50 MWh of electricity over a 12 month period, meeting more than a third of the company’s usage.
à‚
Using a crossflow turbine from Ossberger, Forest Pennant will generate around 12 kW of power: at maximum flow rate – 200 litres of water passes over and through the guide vanes per second.
à‚
The electricity generated by the hydro turbine is fed into the distribution network of the stoneworks and any surplus is exported to the national grid.
à‚
Forest Pennant managing director, Nick Horton, estimates that the net contribution to the company, when the government feed-in tariff has been added, will be in the region of à‚£15,000 (US$24,000)à‚ per annum.
