Microsoft chooses biogas to power data centre

Microsoft (NASDAQ:à‚ MSFT) à‚ is to build a biogas powered data centre at its Wyoming offices in the US in the spring.

The company hopes to reduce reliance on the national power grid through using a 300 kw fuel cell that uses biogas from a waste water treatment plant.

Sean James, Microsoft’s senior research project manager, told technology news website GigaOM in an interview that the development will be “the first zero carbon data centre”.

Microsoft might build micro data centres at other water treatment facilities if the experimental project goes well.
