Indian university to run on solar

In a move aimed at reducing its energy costs, a research university in India‘s Odisha state has announced plans to install an on-site solar power system.

Sambalpur University’s plan calls for a 245 kW photovoltaic (PV) system on the roofs of the campus’s student hostels, which house around 1800 students, and its academic and administrative buildings.

The system is expected to provide 24/7 power for the student residences and to reduce the university’s energy costs.

The project is to be funded by the Rural Electrificiation Corporation, which is run by India’s energy ministry, and implemented by the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA).

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the project is to be signed soon, according to the university, and tendering will begin thereafter. à‚
