Home furnishings retailer IKEA announced that it plans to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on five more of its United States locations.

Implementation of these projects will extend the IKEA solar presence to nearly 85% of its U.S. locations.

About 20,400 solar panels will be installed at the five stores, adding up to a total generating capacity of 4.8 MW. Collectively, the five projects will have an annual output of 5.62 million kWh of solar electricity – the equivalent to reducing 4,273 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).

IKEA contracted with REC Solar for its solar project at the Pittsburgh store. For the four other locations, IKEA contracted with SoCore Energy, which provides some of the largest retailers, municipalities and commercial property owners with unique solar solutions.

IKEA will then have a total generating capacity of 31.6 MW in the U.S.
