The Renewable Energy Certificates System (RECS) will start test trading starting Jan 1,2001.
The countries involved in the test phase are Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Greece and Italy. France and Belgium are expected to join in at a later stage.
Energy companies and organisations from various European countries launched the system with the aim of promoting the use of renewable energy through European trading of green certificates. Accordingly one certificate will be given for each 1,000 kilowatt hour or 1 megawatt hour of electricity produced by a renewable plant.
A traded volume of 100 gigawatt hours is targeted for the 18 month long testing period. These certificates can be bought or sold separately from the electricity produced by renewable plants, to give value to the environmental benefits of such plants.
