The Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE) is currently in discussions with US company GTherm about using their technology in a 12 MW geothermal pilot project, reports Energias Renovables. 

One of the drawbacks of traditional geothermal plants is that they require significant quantities of water to operate.
 
GTherm’s system, known as the Single-Well Engineered Geothermal System or SWEGS in contrast is a close circuit system so it has a much lowerwater requirement.
 
Currently, there are five geothermal units producing 165.5 MW of electricity at the Miravalles geothermal resource, which represents 13 per cent of Costa Rica’s total installed electricity capacity.
 
Its geothermal resources are continuing to be developed in order to bring more clean electricity onto the grid.
