Australia’s first carbon neutral water plant aided through CHP

Western Water in Melton, Victoria has laid claim to being the Australia’s first certified carbon-neutral recycled water plant, thanks to the installation of a biogas cogeneration unit.

Western Water succeeded in reducing the carbon footprint of its Melton treatment plant by almost 75per cent.

Speaking to the Melton Weekly Western Water managing director Neil Brennan said the cogeneration unit, which uses methane emissions generated by recycling waste to power the plant, was designed to minimise its footprint.
