Areva (Euronext: CEI) has been awarded a contract to develop a biomass cogeneration power plant at Commentry in France.

The company will work in tandem with French industrial boiler supplier Leroux & Lotz Technologies and the contract is worth in the region of $72m.

Areva was selected by Neoen, an electricity producer from renewable energies for the development in the Allier department.

The plant will be fuelled by wood chip and will enable the reduction of 40,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year as well as generating around 15 MW of electrical power and 50 MW of thermal power.

The plant is scheduled to be operational for the first quarter of 2015.

Previously Areva completed the construction of two similar biomass power plants, one in Pierrelatte, France (Drôme department) as well as in the Netherlands.
