Storage to support Scottish island wind system

A 1.68 MWh battery energy storage project for an on-site wind power system in Scotland is underway, with transport of the first four units to the site.

Manufacturer redT energy said this week that the four 15 kW/240 kWh units are now sited on the Hebridean Isle of Gigha, and are ready for installation and commissioning. A further three units are planned to be delivered.

The containerized vanadium redox flow batteries will provide grid support services for a 330 kW community-owned wind turbine on the island, redT said, while also providing voltage and frequency support services and backup power.

Scott McGregor, redT energy’s CEO, said: ‘This 1.68 MWh system will help increase the output of the island’s community wind farm, generate revenue and bring greater energy security to a community located in a remote part of the UK.’à‚
