Solar-diesel hybrid power for Eritrean mining operation

A solar-diesel hybrid on-site power system is set for delivery to a mining company in Eritrea after a 10-year contract was signed this week.

Under the contract, the hybrid system from Aggreko will be supplied to Canadian mining firm Nevsun to power its Eritrean copper and zinc operations.

The system will provide 22 MW of diesel-fired power and 7.5 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) power. It will be monitored using proprietary remote monitoring telemetry, which Aggreko said will ensure optimum operational and fuel efficiencies.

The company claims the hybrid system offers a 15 per cent reduction in off-grid power costs over diesel-only systems.
