On-site power for California organic foods firm

An organic food processing and shipping facility in the US state of California has upgraded its energy infrastructure with a new gas-fired cogeneration plant.

The plant, installed by Fresh Venture Foods (FVF) in the city of Santa Maria, came online in June.à‚ It supplies power and process heat for FVF’s corporate headquarters and packaging and shipping facility.à‚

FVF said it had chosen a cogeneration plant after an extensive feasibility study to meet a large portion of its facility’s power needs, reduce its carbon footprint and control energy costs.

Cogen systems developer CLP Energy and engineering consultancy Axiom Engineers designed and built the plant, which features a genset supplied by GE distributor Western Energy Systems.

The genset includes a 633 kW Jenbacher J312 engine, a skid-mounted chiller and two water towers.à‚
