Carmaker Nissan has commissioned an on-site solar photovoltaic (PV) array at its manufacturing facility in Sunderland, UK.
The 4.75 MW array features 19,000 PV panels and the company said it was installed within the loop of the plant’s vehicle test track by London-based solar firm European Energy Photovoltaics. All of the power it generates will be used by the factory.
In addition, the Sunderland facility features 10 on-site wind turbines which have been in place since 2005 and supply a total of 6.6 MW.
Together, the solar array and wind farm will supply 7% of the plant’s power needs, enough to build the equivalent of 31,374 vehicles, Nissan said.
The Sunderland plant is Nissan’s European production centre for its electric Leaf car and batteries.
