The global biogas market was worth $17.3bn in global revenue in 2011 and will nearly double to $33bn by 2022, according to a new study.

Figures from Pike Research show that global installed production capacity is now more than 800bn cubic feet per year, representing nearly 14.5 GW of installed distributed and grid-scale renewable generation capacity.

Senior analyst Mackinnon Lawrence predicted “steady growth for the biogas industry over the next decade”, with one of the drivers being “widening opportunities for renewable natural gas in cogeneration applications”.

Pike’s report states that the market for biogas “sits at the confluence of a number of forces, including increasing demand for distributed generation, tightening environmental regulations, and accelerating build-out of infrastructure for natural gas”.
