October 15, 2002 – Electrotek Concepts, a division of WPT, Inc, has been awarded a contract by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) for the procurement, installation, and evaluation of microturbine technology at the Harvey Cedars Bible Conference Complex on Long Beach Island (LBI), N.J.
This project represents the second phase of a project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy as part of its mission to promote energy efficiency, advance new and innovative technologies, and reduce the environmental impact of energy use.
The first part of the project took place from 1999-2000 when the New Jersey State Energy Office contracted with Electrotek for the development and demonstration of a distributed generation project on LBI. In collaboration with Conectiv Power Delivery, Electrotek completed a feasibility study that concluded there were significant benefits associated with implementing distributed generation on LBI.
The island is characterized by a very overall low load factor with significant peaks during the summer vacation season. Distributed generation enables incrementally and economically providing capacity to constrained distribution systems such as on LBI. Additionally, distributed generation provides an extremely efficient energy solution at locations far from a substation.
Electrotek used the Distco Suite™, its sophisticated modeling tool, to conduct a technical and economic analysis of the LBI distribution system, along with the sub-transmission and transmission system, to determine if advanced distribution generation technologies would prove appropriate for improving system reliability and decreasing system cost.
Electrotek found that distributed generation would provide the intended results on LBI and that microturbine technology would be appropriate for the Complex, a facility including a conference center, a dining hall, gymnasium, lodge, chapel, motel, indoor pool and maintenance building. Several distributed generation units will be interconnected to the utility distribution system.
According to a press release from the BPU, the project “has the potential to increase the supply and use of clean energy resources, as well as increase transmission, sub-transmission and distribution system reliability in an area that is facing reliability issues. The microturbines will also improve the overall efficiency of the island’s power delivery system.”
