The Bunhill Heat and Power project in Islington has utilised a 1.9 MWe Cogenco combined heat and power (CHP) unit, delivering district heating to 850 homes, two leisure centres and other public facilities.
Phase two of the project is now underway. The Council, Bunhill Ward and the EU CELSIUS research project (managed by the Greater London Authority) have agreed to fund an extension of the heat network, and to provide additional heat production capacity for connected buildings.
The extension will allow a further 454 homes in the area to be connected to the network, with the potential to supply a further 1000 homes.
The existing heating pipe network from the Bunhill Energy Centre will be extended to capture waste heat from the tube network and an electricity substation. Work is due to start in summer 2015.
Cogenco, a Veolia group company, provided the initial system and is also maintaining it.
