Heat from computers warms homes in Finland

Tieto Corporation (OWX:TIE1V)à‚  is investing €10m ($13m) in expanding a data centre, heat from which will feed a Fortum district heating network in Espoo in Finland.

The Espoo data centre already produces 30 GWh of heat annually, enough for 1500 homes, but will generate significantly more through Tieto’s investments.

Expanding the data centre, and doubling its capacity, will also enable the firm to shut two outdated centres, said Tieto.

Fortum, which is working with Tieto on the project, will replace some fossil fuelled capacity for its district heating network with heat from the data centre.
