Call to build Bulgarian cogen plant launched

Bulgarian utility Toplofikacia Sofia, which supplies district heating to the nation’s capital city, has launched a call for tenders to develop a cogeneration plant using heat-only boilers.

The call to build the Ovcha Kupel plant in Sofia includes supply and installation of a new cogeneration system with three gas-fired engines and a total capacity of up to 10 MWe/10 MWth. The scope of work includes design, delivery of plant and equipment, installation, testing, commissioning of all equipment and staff training.

The project is supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and will receive grant funds from the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund (KIDSF). Toplofikacia Sofia will also contribute funding under the rubric of its ongoing heat network upgrade and modernization.

Sofia’s 4300 MWe district heating system is Europe’s second-largest. The €36.4m ($38.8m) modernization project was announced in January and includes plans for replacement of around 63 km of old pipelines with pre-insulated pipes by 2018.
