A district heating network in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts, US has been commissioned by Veolia Energy North America.

The US$112 million ‘Green Steam’ project included the completion of a 7000-foot (2000 metre) steam pipeline extension and a reconfiguration of the recently acquired 256 MW Kendall Station into a combined heat and power plant.

By capturing and reusing heat that was previously lost to the environment, the increased efficiency is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 475,000 tonnes annually, nearly 6% of non-transportation carbon emissions for both cities.

In addition, these developments allowed Veolia to export thermal energy from Kendall Station, thus minimizing the requirement to condense steam and so the environmental impact to the nearby Charles River.

Veolia‘s district energy networks support the critical energy requirements of 250 customers in the central business district of Boston, the biotechnology corridor of Cambridge, and the Longwood Medical Area.

Boston mayor Martin J Walsh noted that completion of the project marks ‘an important step forward in attaining our Greenovate Boston goal of reducing Boston’s greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2020 and 80% by 2050.’
