Chilean mining firm Codelco has announced the construction of a power plant that will use copper mine waste as an energy source, which will become the first of its kind in the world, reports AFP.
The plant will be fuelled with copper tailings, which are by-products of the copper production process.
The plant will be located south of Santiago in a complex that contains the largest underground copper mine in the world.
“The aim is to exploit the energy currently dissipated with a single development worldwide,” said Francisco Danitz, manager of Codelco’s energy and water resources business. à‚
